What is DKP?

DKP (Dragon Kill Points) is a loot distribution system where members earn points for participating in guild activities and spend those points to acquire loot. Invented by the EverQuest guild Afterlife, DKP has become one of the most popular and enduring loot systems in MMO history.

How DKP Works

1. Earn points by attending events, killing bosses, and contributing to the guild
2. Bid points when desirable loot drops
3. Highest bidder wins the item and spends their points
4. Points accumulate over time, rewarding consistent attendance

DKP Variants

Zero-Sum DKP Points spent on items are redistributed to all raid members present. Total points in the system always equal zero.

Fixed-Price DKP Items have predetermined costs. No bidding — you either have enough points or you don't. Simpler but less flexible.

Decay DKP Points decrease over time (typically weekly). Prevents point hoarding and keeps the system dynamic.

Alternatives to DKP

EPGP (Effort Points / Gear Points) Members earn Effort Points (EP) for activities and accumulate Gear Points (GP) when they receive loot. Priority is calculated as EP/GP ratio. Natural decay keeps the system fresh.

Loot Council A committee of officers decides who gets each item based on factors like performance, attendance, current gear, and class needs. Requires high trust but allows nuanced decisions.

Need/Greed Simple rolling system. "Need" if it's an upgrade, "Greed" if you want it for offspec or resale. Easy but can cause disputes.
